Leah is a five year old springer spaniel. She belongs to friends of ours whom own an groom and board business. And they raise and show springer spaniels on the side. Leah, up until today, was rather large with several puppies swimming around in her tummy. She was due today and we were blessed with the opportunity to be spectators at their birth. It's great to have friends with connections. This actually was our girls' second opportunity to see puppies be born.
By the time we had arrived she had already birthed two of her puppies, and within minutes of stepping through the door the third appeared. She was expected to have five in all. By 9:00 this morning she had successfully given birth to six, and we assumed her family was complete. So we groggily headed back home. When we arrived back, we learned that she had in fact birthed yet one more. Seven puppies. Four boys, three girls. Holy Hannah...am I ever glad that ours all came out one at a time. One offspring per labor is just fine by me.
Once we settled back home I made the girls a big breakfast. Well, brunch by then, really. We sat around the table revisiting the event. Well, some of us, anyway....
